BCM Australia engaged award-winning architect Wolski Coppin to create an architectural response to the Freshwater property's coastal setting. We talked to William Blackwell, Director of BCM Australia about his vision and the challenges posed.

What was your vision and inspiration when you first saw the properties

When I first saw the properties, they were run down and still living in the 70’s, but not in a retro fashionable way.

I could see the potential just waiting to be released.

Given that the semis were originally built in the 1920’s, I knew that the 100 year old Federation building had the fundamentals, structure and bones for a 21st Century renovation.

Being located so close to the beach in Freshwater, my vision was to create two luxury coastal residences that provided a year-round holiday experience while catering to the needs of family life.

The transformation of the properties are remarkable with an abundance of light and flow in the space.

How was the abundance of light and flow achieved?

To achieve the desired light and flow, we worked closely with Wolski Coppin Architecture and YorKorneR Interior designers.

Their vision was to give the semis a new lease of life and luxury. A second story was added, internal walls knocked down, and a total transformation from top to bottom, inside and out to the rundown semis a total transformation.  Thankfully, the original buildings are north-facing so we used huge banks of soaring windows to capture the natural light.

As you can imagine, the renovation was extensive.

How did you see Natural Stone in the Design?

I knew that the end result would combine high-end beach house aesthetic with an organic coastal feel, so incorporating premium natural stone was always part of the plan.

The two storey home epitomises luxury Australian living with interiors inspired by nature, with elegant curved lines echoing the coast and creating an open connection between indoor and outdoor living.

Meanwhile, the outdoor areas are perfect for entertaining with a seamless indoor and outdoor flow. The living space opens out to a landscaped backyard with a striking heated pool as the centrepiece to family life.

Sareen Stone’s Clairvaux Wall Cladding and Ocean Grey Granite were the perfect premium natural stone for the luxury houses.

Ocean Grey Granite - Pool Coping and Landscaping

Sareen Stone’s Ocean Grey has all the typical properties of Granite – strength, durability, and low maintenance – whilst also delivering colour movement within the stone that is both soft and beautiful.

The Flamed finish provides excellent slip resistance and is suitable for exterior or wet area application, hence why we chose Ocean Grey granite for the pool surroundings.

Clairvaux Wall-Cladding - Outdoor Feature Wall

Because the backyard is the focal point of family life, we decided to create a feature wall using Sareen Stone’s Clairvaux wall-cladding. The creamy colour and softened edges of the tumbled white sandstone add a relaxed atmosphere to the entertaining area.

The Wall Cladding embraces the variation of natural stone where no two pieces are the same. As a result, the wall has a unique one-of-a-kind finish, creating an engaging focal point in the backyard.

What are you proudest of about this property?

The project was truly a labour of love.

I’m proud that even though the build and renovation presented challenges, BCM Australia’s systems and meticulous attention to detail are on show through all parts of the process, from our onsite operations to the final quality of the properties.
