Designs by Landsberg Garden Design

As landscape designers, what are 3 really important things Landsberg Garden Design can bring to a garden?

Our skill, our knowledge and our care.

We bring years of experience and practice in working with spaces to make the very most of each garden. Critically, we create each garden specifically for the owners – it is our care for the people and their relationship with their garden that we work to nurture and create something unique and beautiful for.

Our driving focus is to transform, delight and heal;

  • The transformation is both of the physical garden but also of the lives of our clients through their gardens.
  • The delight is present in the design details that are unique to each client and in our planting plans which are textural and also detailed and aim to lift spaces and the spirit.
  • The healing is of both the land and the people that the gardens touch. We work to engage the healing properties of gardens to bring energy back into neglected spaces. Spending time in gardens, even just looking at gardens and nature, has measurable, positive affect on both our physical and mental health.

As a multi-award winning design practice what makes a garden a standout in your eyes?

The garden has to be beautiful and feel at ease. It’s a multi-sensory thing – how does one feel when you walk into the garden? Does the garden bring you back to centre, breathe deeply and relax, or does the garden demand attention? Is the garden well-balanced with space and light? If the garden brings ease and the beauty draws you into it, it is a good garden.

If you take a scroll on the Landsberg Gardens website, you will see many varied expressions of what a garden can be. Rather that striving towards a Landsberg ‘style’, we actively approach each design as something completely new. We seek to understand and reveal the genius loci, the true spirit of the space, so that when it comes time to weave in our understanding of the client’s needs, desires and interests, we can achieve something that is not only harmonious, but transformative, delightful and healing.

  exterior stairs

Your recent design for a home in Sydney’s east included a circular cobblestone feature – what was the rationale behind this design element?

The site is complex with many angles and levels. At the circular cobblestone car court, we needed to cohere not only several spaces but also levels, each with their own strong relationships to other elements. The perfect circles of the cobbles allowed us to impose a strong focus and order to the space, bringing everything in, holding it together and allowing every staircase and pathway to radiate from the circle at whatever angle was needed. All elements facing the circle of house, fences, planting were held together by the circle.

The cobblestone circle is a car court with a long driveway leading to it and thus also a ‘fast’ area of movement. We used the clear, perfect circle with a central point to slow and stop this overly fast space and calm it.

How would you define the relationship between plantings and hard surfaces in garden design?

The hard materials need to work with the architecture of the house so that the relationship of house to garden is clear and harmonious. Having said that, the hard materials are used, as is the planting, to create particular mood and aesthetic – and to perform clear functions of pathway, terrace, walls. The plants and hard materials are chosen to work together to each enhance the other and together create a strong and particular environment. There are no rules about what materials are best with certain plants; each site is unique.

What are you looking forward to in the second half of 2020?

Making as many beautiful gardens to transform, delight and heal as possible!

Are there any new trends in landscape design that we should be looking out for?

We would prefer to look at developments in understanding which guide our design decisions rather than trends. At the moment, our understanding of the impact of climate change and environmental sustainability is growing daily and affecting our choices of both plant and material use.

Coliseum Striato Travertine Features for McCann

Brad, your background is in Project Management in Construction. How different are your days now that you’ve got your own building company?

The main change is probably the hours I put in each day due to running your own business. I am heavily involved in all aspects of a project from the initial design / planning with the client through to construction and handover. This process is very detailed and time consuming but is extremely rewarding when a brief has been delivered to the client’s satisfaction.

You’ve given the Ramsgate RSL an upgrade and a facelift. What were the highlights on this project?

The project came with many challenges one of which was working within live environments and handing areas over in multiple stages. The highlight for me was achieving this while being ahead of program and without affecting the clubs day to day trade and providing a high quality finish.

ramsgate rsl exterior

The Coliseum Striato Vein Cut Travertine looks stunning as a feature for the building. What were the main reasons for choosing this travertine for the wall?

The feel being achieved for the front entry was something that needed a natural feel and neutral tone that didn’t take away too much from the rest of the finishes to the façade.  The Coliseum travertine was the perfect selection to achieve this need and also came in a large format tile which was also a benefit.

It looks like you’ve created your own custom sized tiles from the original 800×400 tiles supplied. How involved was that process?

This process was put together to work within the required wall widths that were existing on site and differed in multiple areas. The design was brainstormed on site to achieve a unique pattern without taking away from the stone itself.

  travertine installation

The feature wall was installed by Onyx Works. Their Instagram feed highlights their amazing work. Have you worked with the guys from Onyx Works before?

It was the first job I have worked with the Onyx team and couldn’t recommend them higher. I have continued to work with the boys on other projects moving forward and the same care and quality is brought to these jobs as well.

What’s next for McCann Constructions?

We are lucky that we span multiple disciplines in hospitality, commercial and high end residential projects that keeps us busy. We are currently working on other club and pub projects with the hope to expand over the coming years to accommodate more clients.

Coliseum Striato Vein Cut Travertine hails from Italy. The beige and cream tones of this stone make it a popular choice especially with the stunning vein cut bringing visual interest to the stone. It features highly visible banding and mineral deposits throughout.

Concrete Lookalikes Step Up

The shop fit-out of Crave Wares in Bellevue Hill in Sydney looks fantastic. What are you most proud of on this project?

The street appeal of the shopfront would have to be my favourite aspect of the overall build and how it draws people into the shop and the impact it has on the street. What I am most proud of is how my team managed to turn two run-down cafés into iconic new homewares shops in a short time frame and to a high standard.

It looks like an Aladdin’s cave but with loads of light coming through all the glass on the street front. How did you get that texture on those internal walls?

The client was really after a Greek Islands vibe, so we decided to use a Californian Stucco texture on a sand and cement render for a few of the feature walls to really make them stand out. Ryan McGrath from Ryan McGrath Plastering did a great job in pointing us in the right direction and providing the finished product.

Can you tell us about all the bespoke joinery that you installed? What was the brief?

The client requested that the joinery didn’t take away from the products but still enhanced the aesthetic of the shop. So with items like the custom day bed and the floating timber shelves, we could really make a feature of the joinery but also highlight the wares that are being displayed on them.

All the joinery had a high degree of complexity especially the floating halfmoon shelves and day bed. The team at H & S Joinery carried out the task to perfection.

concrete look porcelain shop

The flooring is large format concrete lookalike porcelain tiles in a matt finish. Why were these tiles chosen for the shop?

The tiles were chosen because they have a nice finish on them with varying degrees of texture. As the client didn’t want gloss floor tiles that were all the same colour these were a perfect choice, the large format also makes the shop feel a lot bigger.

The building is not new. Were there any challenges that you needed to overcome on this one?

Being built around 1930 and having had a few renovations throughout its time nothing was easy, from the floors being 60mm out of level from one end to the other, termite-damaged floors and limited access and parking it really made for quite a difficult project.

What’s next in 2020 for RMB Projects?

We have a few residential renovations in the pipeline for this year but what I am most excited about is re-building our family holiday home down the coast that we lost in the fires over the New Year.

Ampersand Studio and the Perfect Feature Wall

Allie what was the brief from the client for this project?

The clients live a very relaxed lifestyle with lots of informal entertaining, so they wanted spaces that allowed different zones for casual living. We needed lots of practical finishes because, with three teenagers and their mates, you want surfaces to be comfortable and durable. The home is also very close to the beach, so we were after a bright and airy feel to reflect the seaside lifestyle.

Why did you choose Cascade Cream Limestone wall cladding for this project?

The original concept included a traditional sandstone, but we changed to the Cascade Cream Limestone cladding for something more contemporary. It has a warm tone, without being too yellow, which complements the open feel of the space and contrasts well with the recycled blackbutt floor.

This cladding is also wonderfully textural, but without being scratchy or catchy. It’s surprisingly soft to the touch — because no one wants to snag their favourite comfy jumper on the way to the couch! Overall, the limestone cladding looks stylish, bright, comfortable and textural; just right for this contemporary coastal home.

limestone wall cladding

Were there any challenges you needed to overcome?

To help with longevity the limestone cladding needed to be sealed. Gary from Sareen Stone was really helpful; he talked through the process with the builders from GMC Construction. Because of their attention to detail, sealing wasn’t a problem, but as with many natural stone products, it’s much easier when you plan ahead.

The other challenge was laying the smaller cladding tiles horizontally, stack-bond, with no grouting. This means the tiles are butted up next to each other. It creates a beautifully clean and contemporary look, but it’s a bit tricky to lay. Again, the guys from GMC Construction worked their magic and did a great job, and it was worth it! I love the look of these tiles butted together. It adds interest because it’s organic and textural, but still neat and grid-like.

Do you have favourite materials that you incorporate in your designs when and where you can?

I love using natural stone and timber because these materials bring a sense of warmth and authenticity, which is really important in a home. Stone particularly has a wonderful solid, permanent character, and there is so much variation that you can create any kind of flavour! I also love timber floors because of their warm, organic texture.

To help natural materials look their best, I prefer to keep the colour scheme simple and neutral, like a canvas that allows the natural materials to shine. This means a home can be timeless because flexible items can be swapped out when you need a change. We all know it’s much easier to update your chairs or cushions than replace the floors!

What design trends are you expecting to see in interior design after we move out of the current COVID-19 crisis?

As we isolate ourselves in our homes, I think people are becoming more aware of how spaces affect moods. This pandemic has created feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. I think people will now be craving spaces that promote well-being through a sense of reassurance and comfort.

People have been spending much more time indoors. We might therefore see the popularity of colours that mimic nature, especially for urban, inner-city homes. These outdoorsy palettes can help people feel less cooped up and can contribute to a sense of calm.

Before Covid19 we weren’t in our homes 24 hours a day, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. So I think we will see a rise in the importance of multi-tasking spaces, for example, sofa beds in the lounge room, and desks that can be closed off with doors. And while we all love our families, we could see more separate spaces that people can ‘escape to’, like outdoor rooms or granny flats.

Most importantly we need good spaces to work at home! Even when we are allowed to go back to the office, I suspect lots of people won’t be in a rush. This means more demand for quality, functional office setups at home. Because video-conferencing has quickly become a big part of life, there will also be more concern for things like noise-reverberation and flattering lighting.

It will be interesting to see the design trends as the future reveals itself. But remember, while an interior designer can solve your home office problems, there’s not much we can do to stop your kid from running in, during your online meeting, singing “I like bananaaaaaaaas” with undies on their head.

Zias Building Design – Murrays Beach

Beth, the location of this home is stunning. Were there any specific considerations you needed to make when building here?

We definitely wanted this home to feel like it was connected to the earth. Our services were engaged after the house was under construction so our aim was to make the house feel like it belonged on this site. Stone and timber elements were pivotal in creating this feeling. The owners had already used sandstone extensively in the driveway and retaining walls so this was also a consideration as well as the surrounding bushland.

Murrays Beach looks like a bush beach location. Was there any particular reason why you chose the Cotswold wall cladding for this home?

I love the colour of the Cotswold cladding against the landscape. The colours of the bush, the sand, the water, the sandstone and the gum trees are all reflected in the Cotswold stone. It’s probably my favourite stone cladding because it really does look so natural and so solid unlike many other stone claddings which look “stuck on”.

You have worked closely with Green Image Landscapes on this project. Have you worked with Matt and the team before?

This was the first time I’ve worked with Green Image Landscapes and they did an incredible job. It was such a huge project and the layers of landscaping were varied and extensive. Their workmanship is just beautiful and I really loved how we were able to use the elements of stone inside the house on the fireplace and then Matt was able to use the same stone externally. There really was that connection between the interior and the exterior elements.

cotswold wall cladding

Beth in addition to natural stone you have used some gorgeous natural materials in this new home. Could you tell us a little about the materials and how they complement each other?

We used natural materials where we could balance the large expanses of glass and hard surfaces. A house this size could have looked cold and uninviting without the introduction of natural materials and plenty of texture. I think particularly in a setting like this, it’s critical to work with the view and nature.  In the kitchen we used Navurban blackbutt laminate timber from New Age veneers alongside polyurethane cabinets in charcoal and Caesarstone Supernatural Statuario Nuvo; solid Blackbutt flooring was used throughout the house; New Zealand Wool carpets were featured in all of the bedrooms as well as the media room.  Large format natural stone tiles were used in the downstairs rumpus room which leads out onto the lower stone paved patio. Finally, we used recycled timber for the front door and external beams as well as sustainably sourced Merbau decking on all of the external living areas which looks just beautiful against the Cotswold cladding on the external fireplace and entry columns.

Zias Building Design works in some beautiful locations along the NSW coast. What types of materials and finishes do you find most popular? Do you think this is influenced by the coastal locations where you design and build?

I think a mix of rendered masonry with face brick and cladding combined with timber and stone is always popular. Coastal homes do tend to lend themselves to incorporating stone and timber as feature elements as they are always reflected in the bush or coastal landscapes we see much of on the Coast.

What new projects are in the pipeline for Zias Building Design?

We have several new exciting projects coming up this year. In particular, an enormous house we have designed at Killcare Heights where I will be doing the interiors and a gorgeous renovation of an art deco house near the beach. The Killcare project has extensive landscaping and external living areas which I am envisaging using Limestone, so will be another opportunity to work with Sareen stone again in the near future.

A Grand ReVision

The outdoor space has also been transformed, incorporating a neutral palette with calm colour accents to ensure a relaxed ambience. The home has several pairs of French doors opening onto the sunny terrace and an intimate garden where the subtle beauty and neutral tones of Sareen Stone’s Tavira Alfresco Limestone tiles complement the natural oak floorboards inside. The pool area is just as stunning with ocean green pool tiles and sand-like tones of Tavira Limestone providing a sub-tropical oasis.

exterior dining

Tavira Alfresco Limestone is a lightly coloured limestone with an elegant yet relaxed ambience echoing the tones of sand on the beach. A brilliant choice for any outdoor area be it for entertaining, external walkways and pool surrounds, due to its beauty and lightly textured finish ensuring it works perfectly for both covered and uncovered outdoor spaces. Tavira Limestone is also available in a honed finish allowing for a seamless flow from indoors to out when combined with Tavira Alfresco.

Enhancing the charm and tradition of the origins of this home, Sareen Stone’s Charcoal Grey Granite Cobblestones provide a beautiful welcome statement as you enter the property. Aside from charm and beauty, these cobbles also offer low maintenance and lasting durability with a non-slip flamed finish perfect for high traffic areas such as driveways, pathways and alfresco areas, in either residential or commercial environments.

Gardner Design is a boutique design studio based in Sydney that wants to change the way you view your home. Their aim is to create a design platform that inspires innovative, functional, and personalised design, which is both accessible to homeowners while achieving a high level of beauty, sustainability, and long-lasting quality.

Why TDDP chose Coliseum Striato Vein Cut Travertine

Tell us a little about the brief for this project.

To create a new family home that embraces the surrounding remnant rainforest both internally and externally. The home had to be durable, stylish and warm. We wanted our home to be our sanctuary from the busy world outside our gates, a place that allows the family to relax, to play and to entertain with our friends and family.

Each level of the house relates to the external surroundings differently. TDDP’s studio is nestled within the garden, directly connecting to landscape. Ground floor floats within the landscape and the sleeping level is in the tree tops. We live in the ultimate tree house, 15min from the CBD.

On the Flip Side

While Sareen Stone had the stock in the warehouse, on inspection the architect felt the stronger tones of the honed and filled travertine was not quite what he was looking for. However, once the stone was flipped to reveal a lighter side the colour was ‘perfect’. The solution had been found.

vein cut travertine floors

Kevin from KQ Projects laid Sareen Stone’s Coliseum Striato Vein Cut Travertine upside down and then only used grout for the joints – the holes in the travertine were left unfilled to achieve the tone and the result the architect wanted. The stone was lightly sanded by Garth from Stone Tech Sydney to smooth the travertine and then it was sealed with STONETECH® Bullet Proof Sealer.

Sareen Stone’s Coliseum Striato Travertine, as the name suggests, is an Italian travertine that is vein cut providing a visually striking appearance that highlights the mineral deposits in a stripe like pattern making it incredibly beautiful.
